Gearing changes on a DS650
#1
Hey eveyonr, You're all probably getting tired of my posts, but hey, they're sensible questions, I think. Ok, I was thinking of changing my sprockets from the stock 16/40 to something else. I was considering the 17/37. what else does everyone use? I need something that will help a bunch in top end speed, not loose a ton of acceleration, and still not kill me on bottom end. I know grer Rowe used 17/37 on his baja. Is there any gearing changes that can do all this, or will I just have to change ratios when I drag race?
Will my holeshot suck? what different ratios are for different things? I was thinking of dragging some cars at the local drag strip, on free drag nights.
Oh yeah, and does anyone know where I could get a set of worn out tires, for asphalt dragging? I don't want to spend to much, just something to use

My ds will be put back together tomorrow and then ill have to dial in the carb. Mark did you race gary from tvi ? his ds has big KC looking lights up front and a set of 12 paddle taller hauler tires and no extendedswing arm he's a big guy.

Adam, the 17/37 is great for wide open desert racing. I used to run it, but if you want to drag/hill shoot, you need to go in the opposite direction.
I'm currently running either 15/41 or 16/41 depending on how steep the hill I'm racing is.

If anyone wants to buy a 37 tooth sprocket I have one I'd be willing to part with. I only had it on for a week. It wouldn't work with my current skid plate and I really didn't need the top speed as much as I thought. It was nice not to hit the rev limiter in top gear though. It's just laying in my garage now.

Ok, what I want to know is what kind of sprocket combo do I need to used for my type of riding, which is: Jumps, drags, trails, just normal sport riding. I need some more speed, but no lost acceleration, or low end

MarkyNark after using your gearing calculator I think I will go to a 15/43 set of sprockets. I have 15/41 now and with the 22 inch tall tires I have now my top speed is 83 MPH. I due not go 83 MPH through the dunes. With the 15/43 set up my MPH just goes down to 79 but will I get better pull up the hills.
