water pump seal question?
#1
Im installing new water pump seals in my ds, and the manual says to fill the cavity between the 2 seals with MOLYKOTE G-n paste. Has anyone ever heard of this, and if so where do you get it? Part number or manufacture would be greately appreciated. I searched it on the net and i beleive dow corning manufactures it but not sure. Can you use something else in its place if i cant get it locally? Any help would be apreciated! THANKS

I looked around to try to find some of that grease as well, but I think any good heavy white silicone grease should work. I actually used some grease with teflon in it(prop grease). One thing for sure, fill the cavity with grease! I didn't do that the last time and the outside seal wore out very fast! Hightower and myself put a small piece of tubing into the weep hole and looped it underneath to help keep the junk out. Anyway good luck!

I didn't want to pay all that at for the grease the manual calls for either, but I was fortunate that the shop where I work has a Moly grease that I used in its place, and so far so good - but I only have about 10 hours on the motor since the new seals so time will tell.
As buttfungus said, my seal failure was due to grit going up the weephole - I found sand on the seals and shaft - so I tapped the hole and screwed in a tiny 4mm hose barb with some clear tubing in a loop underneath to keep the crap out.

ds water pump weep hole mod... I used a 1/8" plastic tubing connector inserted into weephole and attached 1/8' clear plastic tubing and looped it around a couple of times and wire tied it down. This is the first prototype!..lol I'll let you know how or if it holds up! I ridden 3 times in 100 degree weather and is holding up just fine so far....
