I've had my V-10 F-250, crewcab, Lariat, for 6 months now. I really like it a lot. I even got 16 mpg on a recent trip to Vegas. My gas mileage dropped to about 9 towing my new FK-21 Weekend Warrior superlite, empty. That's only 4100 lbs. Towing it in overdrive was a downhill event only. I think the V-10 gas engine is a good 3/4 ton engine, but if I were towing more the diesel is clearly the way to go. The v-10 has enough power, but I wouldn't push it.

My father and I both have Powerstroke Fords, mine a 2000 and his a 2002. We both get about 12 mpg towing or not. We both have enhaced air intakes and superchips, which is why our mileage is so low. Still there's no comparison between gas and diesel. Once you've had a diesel you can't go back to gas. The 2002 and 2003 superdutys have the last 7.3 liters and they are very impressive with 525 ft. lbs. torque stock. The new 6.0 Powerstroke, due out this winter, has more torque and more h.p.
I've never heard anything about older powerstrokes not being reliable, I had a 97 and it was a great truck.

918, I have a 2002 Ford Crew lariat 4x4 and it is a great truck. I pull my 28' desert fox with it and it does well. My camper is between 10,000 and 11,000 pounds when loaded and the truck does pretty good considering the weight.
I get about 7-8 mpg when pulling it. I get about 13 unloaded and pulling my flatbed today that weighs about 2500 pounds I got 11mpg.
Overall I am very pleased with the truck, however I have to say that in the next year I will most likely be buying a diesel. I have found that I am driving much more than I anticipated and I think the diesel will fit me better in the long run.
