Stock is 16 front/40 rear. You don't need a new chain for just a 15 t front sprocket.

I believe you can go up to a 42 in the rear without getting a chain as well. 43 you will need a chain.

So you're saying that you can go to 15/42 without a new chain...is that correct?

43 rear 15 front will work w/stock chain, seemed to low of gear from my 22" dirt tires, worked good with 23" paddles, drag race w/14/43 23" haulers for best results

Thanks JEFFROE!

It's my understanding that with the taller rear wheels to which you're referring, it has the same effect as gearing up, i.e., smaller rear sprocket/larger countersprocket. Is this correct?

I'm trying to gear down because I ride exclusively in the sand. I have 20 inch paddles in the rear and I want to get more brute hillclimbing power out of my Baja. My plan is to go with the 15/42 set-up. Does that sound right to you? I'm not at all concerned with the loss of top-end. Thanks again for your help!

You can do what I did. Save money and work with just a 14t front
Works GREAT IN SAND.

why spend the $$ on a new rear sprocket? put on a 14t front will give you and excellant gear for sand. sidewinder makes a good front sprocket (and rear) 630-513-1000

i have been told that 1 tooth in the front is about the same as 3 in the rear, so doing a 15/42 is about the same as the 14/40, i agree with jeffroe about the sidewinders sprockets thats here i got mine
