Cons of a Baja 650???
#1
Howdy all,
I am looking at getting a new 2003 Baja 650 in a few weeks and I am looking for anything I should be aware of. I am a big guy, 6'4" at about 275 and this is one of the reasons for picking this bike. I currently have a Polaris 400L but no longer need 4X4, winch, blade ect. I am looking to have some FUN!!!. I have heard the Predator is a quick bike but it seems small and like I always say, "no replacement for displacement". The raptor seems small even though it is a 660. I will be riding mostly trails, ditches, fields and the like. No sand dunes.
I want something that handles well, GOOD throttle response ( say 15/20 mph to 50 mph quickly). I am used to riding a 800cc sled with 160 hp in the winter and I want something that will give me a simiilar thrill for spring summer and fall.
Am I on the right track with a Baja??
Thanks
Randy

I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to ride them all, I found the DS to be by far the most comfortable of the three. Your suspicions about the Predator feeling small for guys our size is correct, my knees and back were pretty sore by the end of the day, and I wasn't too excited about the Raptor's handling, although the power was great. The DS is far and away the best choice for taller, larger riders.

I too will be purchasing a 03 DS650 Baha soon. I posted similar a question to this forum about two weeks ago. The replies I received were very positive for this bike, especially for big men. I don't think there's a sport bike that's bigger and more solid then this one. I'm 6'2" and go a good 295.
I'm waiting until the middle of March to make my purchase. A local dealer quoted a price of $7200 out the door. That's a 434 savings off of list because of Michigan sales tax and license/title fees. I'm going to try and get the bike for $7k OTD. Figure I'll approach the dealer and lay 10 C notes on the table and try to strike a deal for 7K OTD. I wish I knew the dealer invoice, that way I would know what a fair deal is for both the dealer and I. He has to make some duckie, I want a deal. We'll see in four weeks when I'm ready to purchase.

Really the only con of the Ds is the weight. But when riding it is not noticable to me. The only time I really hate it is when I bury it in the sand and have to get it unstuck.
As for comparing to the 800cc 160hp sled, well I dont know about that. My banshee gives me more of a thrill as far as speed and acceleration goes. But the baja is a blast. My wife is laying claim to the baja, but it is still mine as far as I am concerned, but she does not want me adding a lot of power.
I have a big gun exhaust, k&n carb mount filter, ron wood cdi, and the dyno jet kit. It runs really well, but is not a race winner especially with my fat butt on it.
If I could only have one machine it would probably be the baja, but it would be a really tough decision as the banshee is my baby.
Hope that helps
