thumb throttle on tm 45?
#1
I'm buying a tm45 , but when i was riding this weekend i rode two other ds's with it, and i've got to say one was terrible on the thumb pull it was so restictive, i don't know how the guy could ride more than a mile without having to stop. i rode half way up the hill and quickly returned his machine. i know i've read some go twist but i really would rather stay with the thumb. seems dsmike or bigger knew a way to adjust a spring, so if anyone knows that would help a lot. the other thing i noticed at the dunes this weekend, was a lot of other ds's i was really surprised at how very few had changed there gearing, it makes a hugh difference, i've run some moded ds's to see them lose, well it is just an observation, and it actually makes it a lot of fun to race after the others have lost.

If it ends up being too stiff (after the lighter Ron Wood springs) try re-routing the cable. It is probably getting restricted somewhere.
Also, you can remove the spring from the thumb throttle itself (there is plenty of spring in the carb to push the cable back up.
I have been running the thumb on mine for a while now and the first day my thumb got a work-out but, after that it has been fine.

I bought my carb from DSmike, and my thumb throttle as just a hair stiffer than stock was. I have NO problem with my thumb getting sore. I'm not sure if DSmike has an extra trick or what but it works

Get used to it... I've replaced the springs with a lighter one and rerouted my cable and it is still stiff. I'm used to it and can ride all day but when someone elsed gets on it thats the first thing they notice.

here's the main reason for a stiff thumb throttel on a TM45 - the cable RW seels for it is the most worthless crap ever manufactured. It is 10" too long, the cable braid is huge and binding inside the cable liner.
Cut the nut off the end of the stock cable so it will slip into the sleeve of the new carb, and enlarge the ball on the end so it will pull the throttle. If you can't do it, find somebody who can - I machined a larger ball out of copper on a lathe, drilled and notched it, and inserted the stock cable ball into it, then into the carb throttle. The stock cable pulls the TM45 just as easy as it pulled the stock carb, and I didn't even take the spring out of the thumb lever. Somebody else on this forum did the same thing - that's where i got the idea - don't remember who now, but thanks!
