It is either the battery, as Zrock said, or the thick wires from battery to engine earth, or battery to solenoid, to starter motor, one of them is loose or corroded. There is a slight possibility of a faulty starter motor, but they usually work, or don't, rather than being dependent on loading.

If it is a loose or corroded connection it will get hot when the starter is being used. To check for a faulty starter, put a test lamp between the negative post on battery and the positive post on starter, press start button, if lamp lights but starter doesn't turn, faulty starter, if solenoid clicks but lamp doesn't light, faulty solenoid. Only do these tests with a charged, good battery.
