it only starts if i put my finger in the air intake port and push the diaphragm slide up a little then if I release my finger it will idle for a minute and die, sometimes it dies instantly.

 

Seems like it needs the carb cleaning out. I remove the jets and blow them and the holes they came from out with compressed air. No altering needles. Works 99 times out of a hundred.

 

That really is odd, as most auto chokes are on when the bike is stopped and cold, no power to choke, so disconnected wiring would result in it starting and running OK until it got warm, when the excess fuel valve should close but won't, giving too rich a mixture for a hot engine.
