i find it amazing that nobody thinks the 450r does well in hill shooting, i've never had a problem with mine. i'll race my buddy on his yfz that stock cept for paddles, and i'll run my 450r on razrs (0 psi) and i'll keep up with him. pismo doesn't have ne thing big but after a lot of wind there's spots that are so steep that if i go up to them any faster than half throttle in first gear, i get slammed into the bars, and i can still jus power up them.

I have ridden one in the dunes. They are fun unless you leave the ground. I jumped one maybe 5' and that is more than a stock V is going to enjoy.

I agree with Crobiker. I have never enjoyed the dunes more than when I was on the TRX 450r. Power and comfort meet right in the middle.

Hey wasn't the thread best 4 stroke duner? Best is not defined by just drag racing or hill climbing or even jumping, but on how well all dune riding aspects are handled overall. Also the heigth of a dune dosen't matter as much because the sand can have different charectoristics from one region to the next causing a major difference in traction. On the Oregon coast there are hills that I have climbed ridding double with my 4x4 one time and the next trip down, especially depending on what the weather has been like, couldn't climb with z 400 the next, it all depends on traction avalibility. So my point is comparing Idaho to california to Oregon dunes is silly. Besides I hate it when someone says their quad is the best and gets ripped for their opinon, to each is own, and different styles require different machines.

this one is easy for me. the yfz hands down. performance wise it is hard to beat one of those. if your really into comfort you can adjust your suspension so that they are softer and have a slower rebound and mayeb a softer seat. if you like to strict drag racing (4-stroke) i like the power of the DS or raptor when modified.

All of the quads mentioned here are great for the dunes, alot of fun...

The difference simply lies in your personality and what style of riding you like.
Several people here made some really good points about there favorite machines so I will add mine.

I moved from the banshee market to the 4 stroke market myself a couple years ago. And decided to go with a raptor. My sole purpose for riding is to target the dunes if even only once a year. three of us went last year and we all had raptors. I can tell you this. My kind of riding is a couple hour excursion at a very fast pace through the dunes. Since I have too drive a long way, I want an ATV that I can comfortably ride all day long. At least one that wil get me through the day.

Most of the light weight shooters (yfz450, crf450's I saw were not maintaining or hanging with us on several mile high speed runs through the dunes. They simply usually tired out or got beat up by their own bikes. Everytime someone would hang with us for about 10 minutes and then they would tire out. We would usually see them perched upon a hill later on. They would go out and ride for half an hour and sit for an hour. When I ride I want to ride and I want to choose a quad that will get me through an entire day of real riding.

My vote goes for the ds650 and raptor by a long shot. They have the power and great suspension that won't turn your guts into soup after a half hour run through the whoops.

Sure you can mod out a yfz450 to have better more plush suspension and a thick banshee seat, but at the end of the day you just spent well over $8k just to equal the comfort of a used raptor or bomb which I will gladly take one of each for the same price as that 450.

And until I can get a used yfz450 for mid $3,000.00 range I wont even consider one.

Just my two cents...

This is a pretty good description by CCTman. When the dunes get all chopped up and I've ridden hard for a day or two on the YFZ, it is a welcome reward to hijack the Raptor from the Mrs for a plush ride. I can ride all day on the YFZ if the sand's good without much tiring but switching to the Rappy afterwards is like sitting on a La-Z-Boy, man, comfy!

how can I get insurance for my sandrail which is not street legal or how can I title it? Want to ride the dunes in North Carolina but can't get a permit without proof of liability insurance. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
