...and thanks for all the great input.
You raise some great arguments for buying used so I am now sitting on the fence.....the extra $$ saved would help with trailer, helmets accesories.
The deal I am getting on a new unit here in Ontario is apparently a good one for a new sp500 ho carb $7,200 out the door. Now keep in mind US folks cdn taxes , duty, set-up and general cost of living are a lot higher up here (even with the stronger cdn $). Everyone I spoke to up here says its a great deal for a new unit. That unit would normally sell for approx $8,500 out the door.
I am not in a big rush but would like to use unit for ice fishing season here in Bancroft area which last generally until mid March (weather permitting).
After that would sit until May whne my busy work season is over. Givne the 6 month warranty should have time to break-in / test unit for problems.
These units are AWD. What is the difference to say a manual 4x4? Any preference here on the list? some say they prefer manual 4x4...less problems.
Thanks again...out looking at units tomorrow.

The AWD system stays in 2WD untill the rears slip 1/5 of a revolution and the fronts then engage. They stay this way as long until no longer needed, and then reverts to 2WD. It is seamless. I prefer it to manual 4WD in most, but not all situations. When the fronts engage, they are locked, all 4 turning. I had a 05 500HO, and it was a very good machine. I can highly recommend it!

A sp500 ho carb $7,200 OTD is great OTD ,our Sault Ontario dealer is selling 500 H.O for $7200 before tax and set up. so it would be over $8300 OTD at best. Even the 400H.O is 6,700 before taxes and freight.
Polaris are all AWD true 4x4 ATVs, The others maker's 4x4s are really 3wd unless they have the diff lock option to lock both front wheels, which most due have now.
When the Polaris is in 2wd mode it does not go into AWD at all, just to clear that up.

new or used? Some of it might depend on your area. Around my area I can pick up a brand new sp500 H.O. for $5000 or E.F.I $5800 Now with that said I could pick up say a 2-3 yr. old used sp500 for an avg. price of about $4000, but you don't know the bikes history. If that was the case I might as well spend the extra $1000 or so and get new with warranty and no hidden issues. Your area may be totally different on the used market. And as moose said a 500 will be a great all around bike. And I would prefer the E.F.I as well

Check around the Ft. wayne area. Some of the dealers are proud! of their popo's and some will wheel and deal. I almost do all my buisness at (Osborn monster motors usa) in Ft. wayne. Real good guys to deal with. If ever I need a part they will get it for me considerably cheaper than most dealers. They will even match E-bay prices if possible. They have a web-site but don't list what they'll actually sell for just the msrp. Another place is up in Brighton MI. near detroit somwhere. (have'nt been their in person but a co worker picked up an 08 sp800 for $6800 out the door) They pick up alot of brand new last years models and sell them quite a bit cheaper. Once in a while you'll catch an ad from them, in the Indiana auto & rv when they've got an over stock and need to move them.
