Default Buying my first ATV

I have a budget of around 2700-2800 bucks, I've seen a few ATV's (used) in my area via the local website "Kijiji.ca" and they all range around 250-400, only 1 or 2 are around 400CC and they are about 20 years old.

Now, I weigh about 360 pounds (most muscle) and I want an ATV that'll pull me up a hill, would 250CC do it? or a 350?

I found one, a bombadier 650 DS, for 2700. Buying it means i will have -0- dollars left for gas etc. But would it be a wise choice to purchase this fella? I mean 650 CC would definantly do the trick.

What would you recommend? I dont care about speed, I just want one that'll pull my heavy *** up a hill :P

Thank you

Are you looking at a sport quad or a utility quad? Are you a new rider?
The DS650 is a larger sport quad with plenty of power, and from what I hear does very well for larger riders. So does the KFX700.
I would recommend test riding a couple different quads if you can. A 250 may be on the small side and a bit under-powered for serious hill climbing with a larger rider...and quickly outgrown as skills increase.
Depending on the year of the DS650 you may be able to talk the seller down. It really is a buyers market for quads these days.

Don't forget to check out Craigslist, too.

Im 330lbs and 6ft4in and I ride small ATVs. One reason is that they are easier to store, trailer and putter around the yard on. At any rate Ive got:

2001 Honda TRX250EX sport
2000 Suzuki King Quad 300 4x4 utility
1994 Honda TRX200D utility

Ive ridden these all on some pretty difficult trails and never once had a problem. Its all about the gearing......and on utility quads they are geared low enough that in my experience its not been any problem getting me up the hills. That 200cc Honda has taken me up some insanely steep hills (lean over the bars to keep from flipping steep) with ease.

That 300cc Suzuki hauls me and my 1300lb trailer around the yard.....so its not even working it a bit to haul me uphill.

The TRX250EX is gearing differently but its got enough low end grunt you can barely keep the front wheels on the ground in 1st gear....it does it quite easily.

I think for general wheeling alot of people go overboard buying large machines...not saying there arent those that need or use them.

Sounds promising, I want to aim for anything over 300, but if i can get a brand new 250CC for $2099, that a good deal? Its a Daymak Sasquatch 250CC (V2) from daymak.com

No......do not buy a Chinese ATV. Im not going to start a "Chinese ATVs are junk" thread....but the fact remains at your size you will flat ruin one in short order. They also "usually" arent geared or setup the same and will be far underpowered compared to a Honda, Suzuki etc.

Buy used name brand......you will be FAR better off.

Ahh, didn't know Daymak was a chinese brand, lol.

There is an ATV store near by, i'll take a look tomorrow morning, try and aim for something above 300CC

Looking forward to riding an atv around

Or i will aim for that 650DS, its a 2000 model

It really depends on the type of riding you want to do. Finding what fits you, your skill level, and how you plan to ride will ensure the best experience. For example, while the DS650 is a big, powerful quad, it's probably not the best for tight, technical trails, but will scream on the dunes or more open areas. Whereas a 250 or 300 may be good in tight trails but will struggle in places like the dunes. Anyway... you get the idea.
Incidentally, $2700 seems a little high for the DS650. I've regularly seen them in my neck of the woods for around $2000 for that year (depending on the condition).

Whatever you choose have fun and, most of all be safe.

Well I just got done getting myself a new ATV, she is the Bombardier 650DS, with many upgrades.

This thing will take a while to learn, the whole clutch ordeal is gah, but i'm sure it'll become second nature soon enough. Almost threw me off last time i took off with her lol.

That's a very powerful quad. If you haven't already done it, I'd recommend an ATV safety class. And, always where a helmet. Take your time and learn the new quad on easy terrain. As you said, it will take some time. Congratulations on your new quad.
