My wife, (5ft tall) rides a Raptor 250. Fits her nice and she likes it.

Seriously, for the original posters wife though, I would recommend a Honda 250 EX or Suzuki Z-250

[edit] Oh, sure, after I make this post I read post #10 in this thread, where he says he already got the Suzuki Z-250. Good choice.

 

I had a kfx 700 for my girl. they are decently fast but are super easy to ride fully automatic.

 

My wife is 5'2", 105 lbs, and rides a 500 Scrambler. She loves it. It has enough power to "play with the big boys", and still nimble enough for her to maneuver.

Sorry, but those of us with a few years and mile under our belts may have a different opinion in regards to a perfect machine. First of all, for all you guys out there, stop thinking that you know what she needs. Most women have enough sense that if given enough information they can make a decision or two without your medling. Instead of telling her, you should be asking her some questions and listening very closely to how she answers. For example, What type of riding style or terrain would you be comfortable with? Do you want to ride fast, slow, do you think you would use 4 wheel drive out on the trail, what about power steering? Fully automatic or can you use a clutch etc. Do you feel comfortable trying to manhandle 600 machine, or do you want some niceties like reverse, or a winch etc. They are questions that should be asked. Then and only then should engine size be considered. Be realistic. Most novices will not need anything over 500 CC's. Most will do much better with smaller bores in the 400 class. And pay close attention to fitting a machine to them. Most women have smaller bodies, and reqire smaller framed machines to be comfortable on long rides. Power steering is a God send. My wife's choice was a 450 Yamaha Grizly with power steering. She felt uncomfortable on a larger framed machine like my Rubicon, or my 700 Grizly, and certainly would not fit on my most recent machine, a 1000 Can-am. I wanted a new side by side, but she wanted her own ATV, and together I think getting her own machine and letter her have her own freedom to control the machine was ultimately the right choice.
