Pullchord problem

No it is not mounted on the motor. Should I try it like that? And no the rope doesn't return itself

The rope should return, but it won't have much resistance since it's not pulling against anything but the spring.

I'd get the cord to rewind before I put it back on the motor.

That's the problem it won't rewind... I've looked at every video and still can't figure it out.
