Rancher clutch defective?
#1
i have a friend who has a shop that repairs four wheelers, recently he has had to replace the complete clutch assembly on four ranchers. the rivets are giving out that attach to the clutch plate. the clutches start making a clanking at low idle before they go. has anyone else had a similiar problem? some one had mentioned to me that the recon had a similiar problem. could this just be a certain group of ranchers sold in our area of west ky or is this a design flaw in the clutch system of the ranchers?
i have a rancher with about 400 miles so far i have not noticed a problem.

I just bought a Rancher 4x2 and am still in the break in process, but my clutch shifts real nice. I do know that if the clutch was out of adjustment and nothing was done about it, it could have damaged it beyond adjustment. I hope this is not a design flaw...

I have a '00 Rancher 4x2 with less than 35 hours, and the clutch was way out of adjustment right off the dealer's lot.
I always had to start in 2nd gear because I rarely could shift out of 1st once I got going (I thought it was normal because of the "ultra low first gear").
So, I took it into the shop to have it fixed, and they said I had to much oil on the air filter.
When I took it out on the trails again, I had the same problem. My Rancher sounded like it started to shift on its own (I was near the top of a small sand dune when it started to make a "clunk" sound associated with shifting). This happened about 4 times in quick succession before I stopped and decided to go back down the dune. This also happened once before when riding over a whoop trail.
So, I took it to the shop again, only to have them tell me the clutch was way out of adjustment. Now that I got it back, it seems ok, and I can shift through all gears easily. However, I wonder if I will have problems later.
