Default 300ex black box

removing a black box wont really add any excelleration i dont think(it revs the same i think for the most part, other than it has a higher peak rev) but the reason they take them out is is gives more RPMS, therefore increasing top end

btw im not sure on this..... this is just a guess so dont take my word

Well I can tell you the limiter is DEFINITELY there for a reason. If you spin too much RPM, the valve springs can't close the valves fast enough, causing a thing called valve floatation. When that happens, it's really easy for a valve to contact a piston, causing catastrophic kind of failures. The problem isn't necessarily when you're winding it out for top speed, but when you miss a gear at high RPM, particularily a lower gear, or get carried away downshifting, which is easy enough to do. The lightened flywheel would make this all happen easier. Traditionally, when increasing governing RPM of an engine, you need stiffer valve springs, harder and lighter valve train parts. Anyway, the horse of a typical engine usually falls off before redline, so in order to really get the benefit of more RPM, you need more air ala porting, cams, carb etc. I guess I don't think it's worth the sacrifice in reliability for the typical all around rider. IMO, if its top speed you want, your better off putting your energy into the little things, like razor sharp jetting, airbox mods, gearing, tire psi. that kind of stuff.

Good answer dzzy. I agree my curtis sparks rev box let my 300ex rev above the 7900 redline but didnt help anything except to snap the main bearing journal. Unless you have lots and I mean lots of head ,cam, porting carb, exhaust mods ,the rev box is meaningless except some thing to add to your mod list.
