400 At Rancher Speed Problems
#11
If youre wide open, on flat ground, and no other symptoms....if it just seems to not want to go faster..then its probably the tires. Try running higher tire pressure, youll give up traction, but gain top end.

I have just about the same hours as "rancher at" but just a few more miles on mine. I'm still breaking it in and I've only had mine up to 35 mph and I still had throttle to go and it seemed plenty fast to me. It was too cold to ride any faster - felt like my eyeballs were freezing. I'll be getting it serviced at the end of this month and will also be getting the extended warranty. I've never had the rancher bog down or misfire or anything that I am aware of. It has been loaded down with weight, that's for sure - most of the riding has been under 25 mph - with probably 60% being under 20 mph.

I run my tire pressure at 4lbs. I have 69 miles on unit and 20.5 hours. Going in tomorrow for the first service. I am going to have them check it all out. It has been starting to backfire when I shut it off. I called and they say they will adjust valves, adjust brakes, check the gears, check the nuts and bolts.
Oil change is another biggie for me. I want to see the color of the oil. I pushed snow at least 50 miles. I am not hearing any valve clatter, but hope to find out how they were tomorrow.
I just took mine on pavement today, and got it up to 34 miles an hour with plenty of throttle left. I just want to not work it too hard until after I get about 200 miles on it.
I am very happy with this unit and it pushes snow, pulled a small truck out of a high center spot in the snow. I have to disagree with those that say 1st gear on these is not a low gear. I think it is low enough for what most need.

Dont get my wrong I love the unit it got me up some snow covered hills this weekend, that 660 yamaha's couldnt get up and through a icy mud hole that 3 guys had to winch out of. Im assuming there is something wrong internally because there is lots of throtle left. just when you push it down it wont go any faster than 36 miles per hour.
I know that some snowmobiles have a chip that wont allow them to exceed a certin speed for a while I dont think the honda has anything like this does it.
36-36 miles per hour is all mine will go.

The problem with your machine is that it was not initalized properly at the dealer. I know this is the problem because I have seen this problem with a few 400's. They are to be done at the factory but some were not done or not done right. The procedure is the same as the Rubicon but there is one more step to do and if it is not done 100% you will have this problem.
