Default Shift Problems with 2003 400ex

I was riding my quad this weekend and it decided not to shift out of second gear. Was on a long trail ride so I had to ride it home the rest of the way in second gear. could it be the shift forks or something really simple. I had a friend of mine say it cost a buddy of his around $800 to repair the transmission, not looking to do that, if that is the case I will go buy a raptor.

Make sure the shift lever isn't bent and touching the case. I've had it happen to me several times before I replaced the shift lever with an aftermarket. If this isn't it then you got problems.

It isn't the shifter. That was the first thing I checked. I was also informed to change the oil as this may have something to do with the problem. It seems that could be an odd problem but who knows. I am going to pull the engine off tomorrow and take it to my mechanic so he can diagnose the problem. Hopefully it will not be to expensive. Any more help please write, I need all the help I can get.

I had a similar problem with mine. I could not shift into second from first, if I did it would go to neutral. I could use force and get it into second, but it would pop out when I let go of the gas. I sent my motor out and they said it was the detent shaft/bolt. I think it was on the inside of the cover. Maybe pull the cover (shifter side) and see it that might be the problem. It could save you some cash.

I ahead and pulled the motor today and took it to my mechanic. He siad he could have it figured out by the weekend. probably won't be able to ride for a while but I don't think it is a big problem. He said since it won't shift out of second it is probably something jammed up and not Something destroyed. He said it was better because if there was a broken piece it couldn't break other pieces as well. Thanks for the help and I will let you know what happens.
