CR500 Questions
I already know not to put a 500 engine in a quad frame. I have read all of the posts about this topic and decided it is at least somewhat of a bad idea. That being said, I have some questions.
1. How difficult would it be to make a counterbalancer work for the engine? There are externally mounted crank ballancers available for racing. It seems that one of these could be made to work with the 500 bottom end. Or could it be possible to counter weight the crank to offset the vibes?
2. What effect does balancing and mass reduction have on the engine? It seems that a lighter piston/rod/crank combo would help some, as would balancing the entire rotating assembly.
3. What other tricks are out there? I have heard of people putting lead shot in the bars, foam in the frame and rubber mounting the engine. Are there any other tricks involved with this setup?
Any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
Nic

CR500 Questions
I don't even know if anything will ever come out of it, but I have a neighbor that has about a 50 year collection of motorcycles, engines, and everything else you could imagine. Actually he owns a salvage yard (about 40 acres) and the motorcycles are his hobby. I was thinking if I could find a decent rolling chassis locally cheap, and combine that with a CR500 or KX500 engine, I could have a relativley fast atv for little to nothing. I already have a 250R that I ride most of the time, so it wouldn't be an all-the-time ride, but just something to make a few passes at the strip and then go back to my trusty 250.
Bansheesmoker -- you have one of the nicest 500 powered bikes I have seen. I am very impressed. What troubles did you come into while building it. Also, how much trouble are the vibration issues. I am fairly big about 5'11" and 220 lbs so I am not really worried about it untill my hands go numb.
I was planning on using a LT250 frame or something similar. Any ideas?
Thanks
Nic

CR500 Questions
hey nicname. I have a cr500 motor in my lt250 frame. I noticed bansheesmoker had a custom built gas tank and things, I dont know if that was needed for the mod or just something he did. with the lt250 frame im still using the stock tank and everything seems to fit well. So if all that was custom to just fit the 500 motor in then maybe the lt250 frame would be a better option although is alot more aftermarket parts for the honda frame.

yea hade to have HScustums make me a tank because the motor is forward 5 inches to line up the shifter and kick starter so the stock tank was hitting the spark plug and rad hoses. trust me I dident want to do it but i had to.and had to have the pipe made also.I also made a exhuast flange similer to the new style 250r ones for a good seal, and a custum stem clamp, rubber mounts to frame, and a custum intake to line up the carb to the air box.I realy took my time with this project. i'm still gusseting the frame in ceritin places like around the motor mounts and the lower sub frame and its needed after time. ive had 2 tiny cracks so far but beefed up around them so i dont have to worry about it aney more. my frame is not foam filled but if I thought of it I probly would have done it. it would be beter to fill last because of welding aneyways same with painting and finalizing. be sure to have me send you detaild pics before you start so you have an idea.I used a honda because I have 3 rs. a zuki would be cheeper and easyer its your decision. Its good to have an extra bike for these projects so your not rushed to finish them just so you can ride again.justaguy will be good help for you to.some thing ive done ive had to do twice and starting these bikes is the most compicated part about them. stuff comes lose and will have to be checked every ride. this sounds like a bitch but when you ride one for ten minuts its worth it. im 5-11 and whey 240 and the vibes dont bug my hands one bit, you cant realy tell untill you get on your 250r witch will be boring when you get off a 500.bla bla bla sorry for rambling on.

I agree with bansheesmoker. Im 6ft 250 lbs so it takes a little extra power to drag my *** around lol. I ride mine for hours at a time and the vibes have never bothered me. After riding the 500 it is hard to get on any other quad and have fun. If you want to ride other quads also ride them first in the day before getting on the 500 or youll be ruined for the rest of that day lol
