Default Help replacing Front CV boot for 02 Rancher

I'm replacing the outboard cv boot and need some help. I've got the axle free from the hub and brake panel. No I just need to remove the outer CV and slide the boot on. Question is how to get the outer CV off. When I got to work I checked my Clymer manual for my Suzuki. It mentioned a retaining clip on that one. Is the Honda the same?

I just got this quad the other day and am going through it. My Clymer manual was backordered and won't be here until next week. I hope to have it back together before then if possible.

Thanks,
Rob

Default Help replacing Front CV boot for 02 Rancher

Ok so I guess not to many people ever tear a boot. Or someone else replaces them But here is the skinny.

Remove the wheel, remove the hub, remove the steering arm, remove the lower A arm at the ball joint. Pull up on the upper A arm (overcomming the shock) to allow enough room free the axle from the outter bearing. Then a couple wacks on the axle (outward) to overcome the keeper ring holding the axle in the diff. Now you have the complete axle in your hand. ONLY the inner CV joint comes off and that's how the boots come on and off. There is a large snap ring on the outside of the CV. That'll remove the CV bearing race. Once removed on the inner part of the shart there is C clip. You'll need the C clip pliers to remove this one (clip has the little eyes to hold the pliers). Once that's off the bearing will slide off the axle and the the boots will come off. So in other words if your replacing the outter you need to remove the inner boot to get to the outter.

Footnotes:

You CAN reuse the bands than hold on the boots if you use care.
The outter CV ISN'T serviceable. Seems like that doesn't come apart...at least I saw no way.
If you know what you doing the process shouldn't take more that 60 minutes. Really not to bad, basic tools. I only used an impack to remove the hub nut.
The boot costs $27...each. Highway robbery if you ask me. The clamps are about $8 each. I didn't by them, I was to depressed over the boot price.
WATCH your boots. the outside one probably sees the most use and that CV isn't serviceable. Looks like if that one gets wasted then it's a new axle. Hate to price that sucker.

Good Luck Yall,
Rob
