Could I hang with a 450 if I did this
#1
I have to bebuild my 400ex engine. I been looking on the net for parts. I bought a ported and polished head for it and i was wondering if i got 440 kit 11:1 piston, a hot cam stage II and a t-4 pro circuit full exhaust and the proper jetting could I hang with the 450's.Any other ideas I'm selling me jeep so I will have a few grand to work with.

it will be able to keep up fairly well, the suspension on the R will let them lose you in the rougher stuff. I ride with a guy with about the same setup as you said, and it is really close

If you really want to hang with a 450 and have a few grand to work with I'd just go trade up to the 450. I know it's hard to give up an old friend but I'm betting you will end up with a 450 anyway so why dump big bucks in your 400. Fix it cheap and move on.

I hung with/passed a stock pred with my setup when i had the stock filter and a corked up exhaust so mine should be able to hang with the 450's but I have yet to race one so I really dont know. Dont use the stage 2 cam, I would recommend spending the extra money for the web cam, hardened rockers and stiffer springs, you should get a heavy duty cam chain too. A carburetor makes a big difference too, I love my keihin FCR 41mm!

Only have about 450 dollars in the bike. I bought it from my friend who blew the engine. I just would like to have good hard acceleration and 75mph top end. I doubt the honda dealer would give me 3000 for my 01. In the end I'd like to have a really fast 400ex with not more than 2500 total investment. Tudors performance has a 440ex kit with 11:1 piston, cam, ported and polish head etc for 1050 bucks. Thats what I'm leaning toward.

I would just give in and get you a 450. Its gonna be hard to keep up with them with that setup, and you dont find many stock ones around, so its gonna be pretty hard to find some to beat. One day you will end up on a 450 anyway, so go for just getting the 450 itself.

I have $2500 into a 440 stroker. I love the quad, I'll sell my right ball before that quad. I have a stock 450r. These two quads are not comparable. The 450 has has more speed, more power, better suspension, and most of all less weight.
Can the 400 hang with the 450? No it can't.
BUT CAN YOU?
