First of all, I am very new to four wheelers, so please excuse my ignorance. I purchased a 2001 rancher 4x4 with 600 miles on it about 7 weeks ago. I road it for a couple of days and then checked the oil. It was a little low, and the guy I bought it from said that it had been about 9 months since it had been changed, so I took it to the dealer to get the oil and other fluids changed. After they changed the oil I brought it back home and took it for a ride. When I got home I noticed that it was leaking oil. The oil had built up on the skid plate and was dripping off of it. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the crank case breather tube and clips. I road it and found that it was leaking oil again so I took it back. This time they said that the crank case was leaking oil. They informed me that they had rebuilt this engine in the past (the friend I bought this from didnt tell me this) and they guessed that they had not sealed the crank case properly. They fixed this and I took it home and road it again. It leaked oil again, this time from the recoil case area. I took it back and after 2 trys they fixed this leak which was due to a bad seal. I have had the 4 wheeler back for about 3 days now, and have taken it out for several rides. I have noticed that oil is leaking out from just behind the recoil area. I dont know the name or function of where the oil is coming from but I'm assuming that there is a seal there due to the fact that there are several bolts that connect 2 pieces of metal together (see I told you I'm ignorant). The amount of oil leaking out is very small, but it is enough to get some oil on the skid plate. I called my dealer back and asked him what he thought. He said that he thought it wasnt a leak that it was seap. What do you guys think about this. I am sick of taking this 4 wheeler back to the shop. Fortunately my friend bought a 4 year warenty and it hasnt cost me a dime, but this bike has been in the shop more than it has been at my house. Is this latest leak/seep something bad, or is it just something to expect from a 4 wheeler this age with this number of miles. Is this something I can just watch and replace the oil with as its needed, or is it something serious that needs immediate attention. At the rate it is leaking it would take a very long time before I even needed to add any oil. I have found this to be a very frustrating experience so far and would like to sell the thing, but I dont want to pawn off a problem to someone else. The waranty is out at the end of november so I need to fix it soon if it needs to be fixed. Please, Please, help me. I would greatly appreciate it.

I would definitely take it back again.A small oil seep can grow over time and your warranty is only good till Nov.yeah its a pain in the *** but the Rancher is a very good machine so let them fix it so you can have less troubles down the road.

 

I agree, I should take it back and get it fixed before the waranty expires. Do you think it would hurt to continue to ride it for a couple of days first though. A bunch of us guys are supposed to go riding this weekend and if possible I would like to go. Of course if it might damage my 4 wheeler I would not do it. So, what is the danger in continuing to ride it as is.

If its just a small seep as you say then I would ride it as you normally would.Hey, you still have that warranty to fall back on.I would just keep an eye on it as your out riding.

Framer, thanks for the reply. What do you consider a small seep? I am new to all this, so all I really know is that a small amount of oil is leaking out. How much is to much? I road it for 20 miles, and there wasnt enough oil to drip off of the skid plate onto the ground. There was about a silver dolar size amoint of oil (maybe a little bigger) on the skid plate. If it isnt going to hurt the bike I can live with this, but if its only going to get worse, I might as well get it fixed. Do leaks ever seal themself, or do they just get worse? Like I said before, I am very ignorant about all of this, but I really want to learn.

u sed this guy was ur friend? i have a rancher that probably has about three hundred miles and its an `03 . i would take it to the shop and tell them i dont want it back untill it works . i hope ur friend is paying for this
