Default first mod. suggestions

i actually didn't measure the deck height. however, i knew that was a problem. i have been told that running the honda xr gaskets instead of the ex gaskets fix this problem. i actually bought the thin cosmetic flexstee head gasket. i actually didn't even use a base gasket. i sealed the base with hondabond. i probably should have measured it to be safe though. these smaller gaskets helps get a better quench area and a better flame travel across the top of the piston. i am not saying i would be able to feel a difference, but it is there in case it did make a difference. the port job i am not too familiar with either. i actually bought a whole ported head because i got a deal on it. also, i kept my stock one incase i did't like it. i actaully haven't even tried the ported head with my fcr carb yet, only the stock carb. it seems to work just as good as stock. when drag racing, i didn't seem to loose any ground. you can clearly see the difference in the head when comparing it to a stock one. redline performance is who did the porting. i am running stock sized valves. i was surprised you mentioned velocity. i think this is critical. i think i suffer here with my x-6 and i am looking to try other pipes. also, the air box is the same way. i run my air box lid on. a velocity stack is on teh way from gt thunder. when i take the lid off, it is ok down low, but it is no better at mid-top end power. people argue this with me all the time. i found the jetting does change by about 2 mainjetsizes by removing the lid though. i am a big fan on the velocity, not necessarily the volume. i am not really into mx but the cam somewhat suits my riding style. i do a lot of drag racing. the stage 2 hotcam seemed to rev a tad higher but i do like this tc cam and i know the quality is there. i have never tried web. i still have the stock rockers and the web cams are mostly hardened.

Good to see you got the lightened piston pin, and the coating is great and something I wish I had the patience to wait for myself when I was doing mine.

There are some other things, but I have a quick question first. When you did the 426 did you happen to measure your deck height? I have found many if not most of us are not actually running the compression we may think we are, and most times this is the cause.

Valves are another area to pick up a little extra, and the "aggressive porting" is an interesting one and let us know if you know what was actually done. I have found that over porting is not a great thing especially for hi rev set ups. I know the ex engine isnt really a hi rev machine etc but if the ports are too large combined with a really large header and free flowing silencer the extra flow can actualy hurt from reduced velocity.

I may not be the expert on this stuff but those are the basics, and the only other things I can think of to make that ex faster is in the suspension dept. Sure you can mess around with different cams and stuff but if its mx your into I think you got a pretty good cam now (Is the TC one of the many renamed cams that are the web450/451?).

Stroking is a great idea and one I have considered in the past, but with all the new engines out in the 450's etc I gave that idea up since I know we are going to lose the big bore battle etc due to the better valvetrain and combustion designs, and liquid cooling of the newer stuff. Not that we are gonna be left behind in the last town but I dont think anyone will be able to get more power from a ex engine than they can a yfz or 450r engine so its only a matter of time.

That can be frustrating (especialy when your almost finished like I am with only the carb and possible stroker crank being the remaining mods you wanted) but is also a good reason to start all over again with the future addition to the fleet

If you want to really get into things find someone local with a dyno and and look into the info beyond the hp numbers, and check out torque ratings, AF ratios and any other info you can get. Then once you have a base to work off of you can see how your future changes effect everything.

I only wish I could find someone like that around here.
OK here we go

First get that damn over priced carb on that engine ASAP because its gonna not only make it more potent but also change a lot of things you are seeing now (it flows better than the stoker).

Before you jump and spend another $400-500 on a new exhaust see if the sparks will accpet the disc set up from the supertrapp that most of the "builder" pipes really are anyhow (they just replace the discs with the end cap). That will allow you to tune in the exhaust flow to find the best trade off between exhaust flow and velocity to suit you etc.

I am not 100% on this but since many other builders use the web 450-451 grind cam as their track or mx cam (gt thunder, white bros, etc etc) it wouldnt suprize me if thats the same one TC uses as their MX cam, but with how secreative Tom is I just am not sure. This is a good grind for what your looking for and the two major differences I can see from the specs (remember they dont list all the info, sadly) is that the 450-451 has a little more lift, and the hotcam stage2 has a little more duration. That could explain your finding the slight advantage of the stage2 in the higher rpms.

The interesting thing with the web 450-451 is that some of the people selling the various renamed ones etc call for hard rockers, and some dont. One thing I do know is that web claims the hardness of the cam is above that of the stock rockers so though it may work there will be additional wear over the stock hardness cam etc.

my fcr is the 40mm, not the common 39 and 41mm's. i have used the 39 before and i have had good luck. this 40 just doens't mount right up. it is an inch or two shorter than the stock carb/fcr 39 and 41. so i bought an adaptor and it doesn't fit in the air boot. yeah, what a mess. i just got my lightened flywheel in today. i hopefully will start putting that on my bike in a week. i need to wait until finals are over with. i have th e need for more power. lol
