Default Recon 250 gear oil

I changed my gear oil 2night. drained old stuff into a clean pail so i could examine it. it was just like a chocolate frosty from Wendys. both drain tubes are connected and routed up the frame to the clear plastic tube (air intake tube??), then point down about an inch. so how do you think this oil got so skanky looking?

should i drain it again to flush out any other possible remaining crud ( it only holds about 100ml of oil) ?

oops, i don't know that this matters, but it's an '02 250ES model.

Sounds to me like you had a little water in with the gear oil. Water and oil when mixed turns a chocolate brownish color..Water could have seeped in through seals if you have had it submerged a good bit, but most likely it was just from condensation! Apparantly it was time for a change. I doubt you will have any problems from it. You can pour the old oil into a glass bottle and sit it on a shelf for a few days. It should seperate and the water will go to the bottom..I see it in automobiles like this all the time. I run an auto repair shop for a living. ITs not uncommon to see.

I second the sounds like water. You might want to change the oil a couple of times to make sure it's all clear.

i figured mucky water too, but how'd it get in, and will it happen again? I guess time will tell. i think i"ll give it one more flush, since it uses so little oil.

It is water most likely from condensation.
I change the differential every time I change the engine oil because it is so easy and uses so little oil.

Air cooled motors, run really cool in these temps. If you start it and only ride for 10- 20 minutes, then the condensation isnt gonna have time to come out of the crankcase. If you do lots of short rides..this will do it.
