If all you wanted to do was start it, when the battery was dead, and in gear, and no handle....strap it to another quad, and pull start it. Once it fires up, the es shifting should work.
I agree with the filter change...make sure its in correctly, it can get installed backwards, and thats not good.

Which part doesnt work? bump starting...or es working after the start?
I know on the older foremans, the battery is necessary for shifting. The newer ones, will shift, with the motor running and a dead battery.

I have tried to jump start and pull start mine when it was not abel to shift ( I rolled it and smashed the es shifters ) The only thing that would work was to try to manually shift into neutral...It would not go to neutral at first so we tried all the other methods. After playing with it for over an hour it finally went into neutral for me..as soon as it was in neutral it started right up.
