Default Recon winch mounting plate, what works? Cheapest?

I have an '02 Recon 250ES. I bought a cheap winch from Costco for $50 (brand new), 2000lb with a remote and a ****** block (great deal actually). now i need to install it, and the mounting plates are $50-75 (US= lots in Cdn), plus shipping. Does anyone know who sells these cheap?

Also, selection for a recon is very limited (prolly cuz no one puts a winch on a recon). so will other model mounting plates fit on the recon, like the rancher, or foreman? I don't mind drilling some holes, but i don't wanna do a whole lot more to re-fab something already made.

does Honda make a mounting plate, or only the winch manufacturers?

i did a google search and bobvila/sears has a $60 set-up with fairlead included, but they don't list one for the recon, but many other Honda models.

I would just sell it and buy a $20 come along. It's a racheting winch. Just use its own hooks to hook it to the rack. I pulled my toyota truck out with one once. I have never had my recon stuck but I have tested it and it will pull it up a hill easy. I tied mine to a tree and it picked it up in the air.

ANother thing is if your engine bogs down in mud and you can't get started a come along will always work. Wenches drain batteries FAST! What good is a wench if your battery dies?

could you please help me. I bough a recon es 2002 and I have the spark plug out and don't know what to set the new gap on. I also need to know how to drain the oil and how much oil to put back in. I don't have a manual and I have a 10 year old that is going to be unhappy in the morning when everyone goes riding but him. thanks

Welcome to the forum bigmama

I did a search on the forum to answers your questions But, came up empty other then, it should hold about 2 quartsTo change the oil, there is a bolt underneath the engine, place a oil pan under it, turn counter clockwise and let it drain in the pan. You should also change the oil filter. However, I can't tell you where it's at, on that particular model. Confused should be able to help you out Unfortunately, he usually doesn't log on until late at nightHopefully, someone else will step up to the plate and help you. Did you think about starting your own thread and asking the same question?

Do a Google search on winches. Where the winches are the mounts soon follow.

The Recon mount is just a thick, flat piece of metal that sits on top of the frame. It is attached by some U-bolts. Just drill a couple holes to bolt the winch to the metal and to mount it to the frame. The fairlead also mounts with some U-bolts to the front bumper.

Sometimes the fairlead can be a big part of the cost if bought separate.

So true I built my mount and went to buy a Hawse fairlead, Cost anywhere from $27-$48 dollars plus shipping. I just built one

sorry so late bigmama, rescuediver had me pegged pretty good as a nighthawk. in addition to the things you mentioned, one of the most important items is to clean the air filter (usually under the seat). clean with soap and water really well, rinse, wring out and let it dry 100%. then a thin coat/film of oil (motor oil works, filter oil is also available) . i use a plastic bag and put some oil on the sides rub it together, then add filter, give it a light coat inside bag, and your set.

oil capacity is 1.6 quarts. add 1.5 qts and just use dipstick as your guide from there. no disposable oil filter, but there's an oil screen inside the the left front crankcase. big pain to locate and change. only needs to be cleaned every so otfen.

spark plug is a NGK DPR8EA-9. The "-9" part means it's gapped .9mm. you can check the gap tho, it says it shoud be .03-.04 THOU, (that's .8-.9 metric)
