my 400EX does about 75mph, i have a 16t in front and 36 in the back, i can spank a stock yfz

 

Why is top speed so important? Where do you guys ride that you are always going topspeed. You could gear one so tall it might go over 100mph but you would have to push it to get it moving. I have ridden my 400ex at top speed on a beach about the time it gets to that speed the fun is over I stop and go do some real riding!

 

i ride the state trails in wi, sure there might be speed limits but when ppl hit me up to race i will and top speed is the way to win those races, mine being bored and what not is fast enough up to my top speed that i will beat ppl all the way through the gears

yeah i have a 400ex and and i have some friends with bikes and one with a scrambler 500 and i can burn most of them in a drag

also when i ride in the highway and i can just burn the cars. ive never had it tested but ide say a 400ex can get to 70mph no sweat

 

Seems simple enough a question, and at first I figured the answer was not too diffilcult either, but somehow it appears there are those who for whatever reason just can not accept that fresh from the dealer a new 400ex should have a top speed someware between 60-67mph depending on all kinds of variables like those mentioned earlier in the thread and some others (altitude, grade, break in time, air filter condition, true compression, air temps, etc etc etc) and that the majority will be pretty much smack in the middle of the range 64mpfh !!!!

I am sure there are specific conditions that would cause a need to actually have a higher mph, but there few and far between, and for the average rider the issue is acceleration (even for drag racing!!) and not the last few mph that will hardly ever be used anyhow. Sure that can and does change with a modded machine (actually you get to top speed faster and dont really increase it much) but its the performance that changes, and not the actual top speed unless you change your gearing to increase top speed.

Since most people tend to reduce gearing for better performance thru the entire range of speed it seems this is almost a waste of time, and those who keep coming up with 70+ claims have either changed their gearing, or like to tell fish stories.

So there it is in black and white, and like it or not your stock 400ex isnt going to be passing cars on the hiway in a 75mph zone (where you would be a total moron to ride in the first place!!) but it will get up to the speeds discussed earlier and do a very good job of performing in its normal range, and has plenty of potential with the right mods etc.

Continue to post all the new nonsense you like (you will know who you are when you read this lol) as I am no longer tracking this thread because it seems after all the usable info is posted is when all the crazy claims come out, and this doesnt help anyone in any way.

 

99-04 400ex stock between 64-67mph
05-06 stock about 55mph

the 05-06 i think runs 14/39 gearing so those years got more torq but less top end power
