Gearing for TRX 450R
This is my dilemma. My trx was built by Sparks. It has the JE 13.8:1 94mm piston, X4 hi rev cam, porting, titanium valves, 41mm FCR carb, new dyna-tech ignition and the X6 exhuast. I've got 22x11x8 7 paddle skat trak haulers and with 14x38 (stock) gearing it will bog if I try to start in 2nd. With 13x38 gearing I have no problem doing 2nd gear starts but I'm losing some top speed to the YFZ about 1 bike length in 300ft. Both of my brothers have YFZ that were also built by Sparks with the identical equipment that I have except they were bored over 1mm to make them true 450's. All 3 quads make about 52 hp. If I run 14x38 I will have to do 1st gear starts which may not be too bad since the Honda's 1st gear is taller than the YFZ. With 14x38 the quad will barely make it to 4th in 300ft. With 13x38 the quad is screaming in 4th in 300ft. Im thinking that going lower would allow for 2nd gear starts and get me into 5th for a little quicker acceleration and overall topspeed. Like 13x40. Any Suggestions now that you have all the info would be appreciated?

Try 13/37
For every tooth you go down in front its about equal to going up three in back. So go down one in front and down one in back.
I raced a friend of mine, also on a 450r, on the beach in Oregon. Top speed I was about 1 mph faster. I had the 13/37 with 20" hauler paddles. He had 14/38 with 22" hauler paddles. With the 13/37 I'm quicker than all Raptors I've raced but they have a faster top end, although they can't catch me until we're both in 5th.

I would think try 14 and 39, if you have one laying around.
