Default 2002 Honda Recon shifting problem -not fixed

Hi all:

I took all advice and cleaned ECU, installed new bank angle sensor ($42.00) now the blinking has stopped and it shifts up to second gear but no further, but first as I said it shifts but it does not engage the gear. My recon has been out of serice for over a month! I have spent much time and a bit of money on this. I dont mind the money but my frustration level is sky high. Any advice on what to do next beside bring it in to dealer?

thanks, this has been a great forum, thanks to trailblazer, prorider and many many others too!

When you say it shifts, but doesnt engage a gear...you mean you hear the motor clicking, but the gear doesnt change?
Try using the handle to shift. Can you get to each gear using that? If it will shift into each gear using the handle, then the tranny is still good, the problem is in the es system.
Is it posible the clutch is out of adjustment, or the oil level low in the motor? Is the quad moving when you try to shift into second? Sometimes if the quad is just sitting stationary, it wont go beyond second gear unless you rock it or are moving.
Any flashing of the gear indicator?

Hondabuster, thanks for the quick reply:

The ansewer is yes to your first reply, i do hear it clicking but it does not go into first gear.

When I use the manual shifter into first, it clicks in but does not engage the first gear and the first gear light blinks 8 times indicating the ECU or angle sensor but as i said I cleaned the ECU and replaced the sensor. However i did not check the ECU "electrically" I do not have that meter senser equipt thing a majig.

I already adjusted the clutch according to forum specs but who knows if i did it correclty in the end. Im starting to doubt my own troubleshooting at this point!

The quad does not move trying to go into second, it wont even engage that gear but i can hear it clicking.

I tired the rocking and moving thing, that didnt work.

Oh nooo, are you saying my tranny could be shot?

thanks for your help, Honda buster!

Dana

if you can't get the bike into second gear even with the manual shift lever, you have a problem with the tranny not the es system.

Hey my Rancher is in the shop right now for kinda the same thing. I will let you know what they find. I was thinking broke wire between the angle sensor and ECU but I just called and they are still trying to figure out what is wrong and they have had it for 2 days now.
