250R tranny leak
#1
The shifter shaft on my 86 R is leaking. We have put a new one in and it still leaks. What could be casusing this? Also, the steering is way to loose. The steering stem bushing where the stem passes through the from is shot, causing you to be able to move the stem about 3mm. Would this cause the steering to bo too loose? Thanks

The shifter is leaking because of a worn out seal. If it's not leaking too bad, leave it alone until you're ready to split the cases.
The steering stem bushings wore out on my R. New bushings are rubber, tighten up the stem alot and are about $25 at Honda. Very easy to replace.

I meant to say that we put a new seal in, but it still drips. It slowly drips after riding, like 2 drips a minute, then stops after about 20 mins. Im afraid to ride it while it is leaking. Will it hurting any thing as long as I keep checking the fluid level?

You'll be fine as long as you keep the fluid up. I know it's kinda a pain to pull that little bolt out before every ride, but you might as well do it. Since this fluid isn't under pressure, just make sure it's full before you leave on a ride, but don't over-fill it.

make sure your check the shifter shaft sealing surface for any nicks or burrs, or there is a possibility that the shaft has worn into the side case allowing too much free play, check to see if you can move the shifter up and down, if you can your going to need a new side case.

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR SHIFT SHAFT MIGHT BE WORN-ALLOWING OIL BY THE SEAL--YOU CAN REPLACE SEAL WITHOUT SPLITTING CASES.UNFORTUNATLY SHIFT SHAFT NEW-ABOUT $60.00.IF YOU CANT AFFORD OR FIX PROBLEM,JUST RUN 80-90 GEAR OIL.NOT THE SYNTHETIC-REGULAR.THIS WILL HOLD YOU OVER.
