Default 2000 Rancher ES

I had the fan assembly on my Rancher come apart. The problem is my friend was driving it up at my deer lease when it happened. ( I was not there) I ordered the parts from Honda. A Fan - two pieces (spacers?) between the motor and fan and a hex nut that was backordered. The part description says it is a 5mm hex nut. This seems small, but would it be a lock nut? Honda wanted $2.48 for the nut, but I went and got two 5mm lock nuts for .41 cents at the hardware store.

I want to have the right parts when I go up to hunt so I can use the atv. Anone ever have this situation? If so give me any thoughts so I can be ready to fix it propery when I get up to my camp. The fan is still laying inside the grill, but I got one just in case it was cracked. Is the hex nut they refer to just a standard metric hex?

I live in Key Largo and my camp is 550 miles north in S. Georgia. So I want to be prepaired......

Thanks, WHhtetailer

as long as the size and thread pitch are the same, it'll work, i'd put a little blue thread lock on it too just to be safe.

meh, i wouldnt worry about the fan too much this time of year. Mine rarely comes on the way it is, but it only happens when i'm doing a lot of idling. Those 5mm hex nuts you bought are probably almost the same thing honda sells, it's called "dealer markup" and that's why they want 2 or 3 dollars for one, they ones you bought will work fine, if they are the same thread size. If you have to go without the fan blade, i would at least hook the motor back up and put a piece of long black tape on the end of the shaft, something that will make noise when it's going around when the fan comes on, that way if you do hear the motor start, that pieced of tape will go whipping around and make noise, letting you know the "fan" is on, so you can shut it off and let it cool since the blade isnt on. That will save you from toasting your engine.

Quicksilver,

Thanks, :Lota of good ideas. .. I looked everywhere to see if someone had a 5mm nut with different fhread designations. They all were "80 pitch" I wanted to to tow my disk so I could scratch up one food plot, but you are right about putting an "indicator" such as black tape on the shaft so I can hear the fan go on. (the motor is still hooked up.)

I might have to haul out a real heavy Deer so I do not want to overheat!!!

Now I just have to get "WILMA" away from the Keys so I can go up to hunt.
