Another TV black eye for ATV's
#12
The ATV market is going nuts right now, new machines are coming out every five minutes, manufacturers are actually improving the quads that are out now instead of leaving them untouched for ten years. With this said I don't think the fight to "outlaw" atv's will really fly too well. One stupid TV show is not going to do much. There have been big reports on TV in the past about how atvs are dangerous and how they are so bad but the atv market still continues to thrive. Seems like everyone is just getting all botherd by something for no reason. Just my opinion, not trying to offend anyone.
PS my ATC 110 was "outlawed" 20 years ago yet I can still ride it on any public riding area I want. Just saying it's not possible to outlaw something like atvs, the government can't just say OK the millions of atvs out there must be parked and never to be riden again, and tell honda sorry your out of business.

The Gov't. might be able to say "OK, you can't build ATV any more", but they can say, "OK, now you have no place to ride them"!
If you don't think that is exactly what the greenies are trying to have the gov't. do, then you are very naive.

i found the following from 3wheelerworld.com:
"They where never outlawed. Alot of people think that and will tell you that but they never where. In 1987 The US Government put a 10 year import ban on the import of all off-road three wheelers. Thus in 1997 The import ban was over. So if any of the companys decided to start making them again, and wanted to ship them to the US It would be perfectly legal. As for Canada and other countries, I believe that there was never any type of import ban, but I'm not 100% sure. When the US Government put the import ban on, Honda didn't make anymore after that. Mainly because the US was one of the greatest sources for ATVs."
as far as those not seeing the black eye that we are getting you need to wake up. any bad publicity about something and not countered with good publicity frames the mindsets of the masses to think certain things about atvs. it wil get ingrained into them. most people think atvs are toys, babysitters for their kids, not a serious machine that needs careful operation. remember the Ozzy stuff recently? Diane Sawyer reported that all atvs go 100mph, weigh 600lbs etc. Jack Osbourne said the banshee weighed 600lbs and does "like 120mph.." WE know its BS, but to the world that just soaks up every little tid bit of news (especially bad news) without knowing the facts, it would be beleivable. And when TV shows have atvs that show riders always getting hurt and stuff, you dont think that has any bearing on the ATV's public image? Think again.
Cars wont be outlawed b/c they are regarded as basic, necessary transportation regulated by the DMV and such agencies. ATVs are regulated by the CPSC which does communicate recalls for autos too but they totally govern ATVs. The same agency that directly controls the electric can opener, regulates your ATV. Thats out of order. I say move ATVs from the CPSC to an agency that understands motor vehicles. Motorcycles (which easily chalks up more deaths per year than atvs) are not directly regulated by the CPSC...
by the way, im in no way knocking the 110. I still have mine. it needs some work but it was my first atv i got when i was just a very little chap. i blazed more trails on that little machine than all my others combined (of course a banshee or 250R, 450R are not machines for trailblazing..they rip @ss too much and cost too much for that!). but its a good little bike and you gotta love that dual range transmission. we i get it totally restored, i wont ride it much. i am too used to machines with suspensions now. balloon tires just cant hold a candle to a shock absorber.

If I understand the "banning" of three wheelers right, it was an agreement by the manufacturers to stop making them. In concession, the CSPC would not seek any bans or resrtictions on 4 wheel atv's. The three wheelers were never actually banned. Much like the "banning" of two strokes. They'll still be legal, just not manufactured for the general public.

I am not sure about anyone else's region but around here alot of money is made from atv's and snowmobiles. I live right up the road from Clough State Park and there is always a ton of people riding there. If there was any kind of "ban" around here the state would lose alot of money. The state usually does what is in it's best interest $ wise. I can't see them ever banning atv's.
