TRX250X
#1
Hey guys, new here. Bought a 1991 250x from a buddy for $500 that I know has always ran good. The problem has always been it's a bear to start because it only got ridden 1-2 a year.
Every time, the same routine, new plug, new gas, clean with carb cleaner then it runs like a champ. Bought mostly to trail and wilderness ride.
Anyway, now that it's mine, I want to clean it up, like going through the carb etc. Here's my questions!
1. What years, other motors parts, are interchangeable to some degree with the 250X(300EX?) etc?
2. Anyway possible to convert to an electric start?
3. Wanting to hop it up a little so whats the best bang for the buck as far as muffler slip on, full exhaust, brand, etc? Also, what is a good upgrade for the jetting size of the carb or any other part that do not require breaking open the motor? I believe I saw a Dynojet kit for this motor, is that the way to go? And lastly a hotter plug?
4. Sprockets?
5. Which tires are good for fast trail and wilderness rides, (puncture resistance etc.)
Any and all comments are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a 92 for 8-9 years , a freind had one also , mine bone stock. His , piped jetted bigger piston , k& n filter cam, twist throtle ect... , from his prespective " a waste of time & money " . I cant say I disagree. He and I both agree my stock , other than tires, bike was not a lot slower, totaly reliable , and faily matinance free. I put 8x10x23 front and 12x10x22 rears for ground clearance. changed oil , about every 50 hrs. or so. never had any probsother than an exiter coil that went sideways. best of luck you have a great trail bike to enjoy , hope this helps, just my 2cents .

It is true that you don't get a lot of bang for your buck out of the 250cc and less motors sometimes. Still, a good all around exhaust and intake kit will make it easier to ride and will likely sound better to you. As long as the jetting is right, you should see no loss in reliability going this route. As for jets, I would stick with oem jets and just buy the sizes you need. The exhaust manufacturer will be able to get you close. Some of the jet kits use a different numbering system, and can be confusing since a lower number may actually be a bigger jet. For tires, I would just stick with ITP Holeshots, Maxxis Razrs, or Kenda Klaws. Make sure to get 6-ply tires for the puncture resistance. You can steer clear of the heavier tires like the Razr 2, Irazr, HD, etc. unless you are going mudding, and even then there are better tire choices out now. I am not sure on tread wear, but ITP has the Trac-Stars out now, they are a low cost replacement radial, a decent tire at a great price. If you replace the sprockets, get both plus a new chain at the same time. Primary Drive is good on a budget. Sidewinder has some nice stuff if you have money to burn. Have fun with that X, they make great trail quads.

Well i know you would like to get more power every other post on these foriums are about adding a better exhaust rejetting better air filter and what not ! But i would get new tire's new chain and sprocket's, in other word's i'd fix it up for a good reliable quad so you don't have to worry about getting standed and having your friend's towing you home ! A winch would would be nice , you can tow some of your friend's out when they try to go where they shouldn't try to go ; and electric start is another plus ! Get it in great running shape i've got a cousin who had a 89' honda trx 250 2x4 and he pulled his brother in law's 350 big bear and kodiak out of the mud a lot ! The first time i rode with them he had to tow my 93' suzuki LT4WD King Quad out of a bad mud hole he had no trouble going through the same hole ! A lot of it is rider skill , but i would get everthing in shape then if you have extra money left you can alway's do power mod's later ! You should drain old fuel from tank and carb , and add some seafoam in your tank, it's a fuel cleaner/stabilizer that will clean your fuel system and combustion chamber it some good stuff ! You can get it at most auto parts stores like O'Reallys, auto zone and advance auto parts , i got mine at O'Reallys for $4.99 plus tax maybe more in you area ! This stuff works miracles on all engines both 2 and 4 stroke engines. .........i hope this help's and good luck and welcome to the foriums..............williebee
