Rancher - waterproofing advice

Hello,
I have a friend who has an 02 Honda Rancher 4x4. He's had the thing rebuilt twice, and the mechanic has told him the problem was operating in too deep of water. Now we're curious how he could waterproof it. So my questions are:
Where is the air intake located?
What is the best way to waterproof it (let's not go overboard, just make it able to handle water up do the handlebars safely)?
Any other advice?
Thanks!

Remove the seaat
Look at the airbox, there is a white tube exiting it.
Follow it foreward and you will see where it ends just foreward of where the front edge of the seat rests, just on the upper backside of the fuel tank under the plastic is the opening for the air intake. Also take note of the rubber hoses in that area. There are 2 hoses that are diffferential breathers and one that leads to the carb breather. Laso look on the bottom of the carb. There should be a hose attatched to the bowl. It runs down under the quad. There should be a one way valve along the way. If not put one in to keep water from getting into the float overflow. The other hoses I mentioned need to be extended to the handle bar ares and the white tube modified in some way to extend above the water level that will be riden in. An automotive spray ignition sealer should be used over and around all electrical connections. Be careful of grease in the electrical fittings. It may rot the factory rubber seal in time.
