recon 250
I purchased a new 2005 recon. (TRX250TM) After owning it, riding it, and servicing it for 2 years, I would recomend buying one. I have 130hrs on mine and I have never had any problems with it. It is easy and inexspensive to maintain. It only takes 1.6qts for an oil change, the air cleaner is easy to access and clean, and the valves are relatively easy to adjust.
The front brakes will require disassembly and cleaning eventually if you ride in mud. This ATV has a centrifugal clutch so it is important to use a JASO MA motorcycle or ATV engine oil. Also, change the oil and clean the air cleaner often. In my opinion the recomended intervals in the owners manual are waaaay to long.
If you plan to take good care if it, I would purchase an hour meter so you when to perform maintenence. This ATV has an internal centrifugal oil filter: it doesn not have a replacable cartridge type. I purchased a magnetic drain plug (Honda part # 92800-12000) to help keep some wear material out of the filter.
If you plan to ride in rocky terain, I would get a complete set of skid plates. This includes replacing the factory rear skid.
If you plan on purchasing a hitch, Honda has one for the recon that includes an oil temperature warning light. I have never had the light come on under any circumstance. Although, I have never done any heavy towing or extended idiling in hot weather. You can probably get away with purchasing a less expensive after market htich.
I would recomend the manual shift TRX250TM. Based on info on this ATV forum, and based on the added complexity of the electronics required, I would not recomend the push button electric shift (TRX250TE).

I own an ozark, but have ridden with plenty of 229 recons. they are a good machine. the only bad thing is . u don't get the thrill of a bigger motor. and it will beat u up over long stretches like a sm 3 door hatchback. but will give u smiles going up some hard knarly terrain. guys in the big machines look and wonder.

it is simply the best atv i have ever owned. ive had it mine for 8 years and have ridden it as hard as you can and have never had any problems. just do the regular maintenance and it will last you forever. it is also one of the funnest atvs to ride because it has plenty of power and with some good tires can go through just about anything.

I have a 2001 TRX 250 Recon, manual shift bike. I use it mostly at the racetrack as a pit/support vehicle for my dragbike. I installed a 48" snow blade and winch last fall and used it for moving snow this winter. I over heated the engine and hurt the crank, so if you plan to use it for pushing snow, be careful and make sure not to over heat the engine. LG.

We have 1 Recon and I am buying our 2nd one today. We've had no problems with it, even the ES has been perfect. Fits my kids just fine. I've ridden it, much rougher ride then my ATV but for its size its fine. Its not a heavy ATV, to be honest using it for much snow I think you'd want something 4wd with a bit more power, but if the snow is light enough I think it would do ok. They do sell a Trailer Hitch Kit with Oil Temp Light, which might not be a bad idea if you are plowing or using it for hauling.
