TRX 300 - rear brake drum seized on axle
#1
I've been working on a TRX 300 4W. Am going to put on new pads, but the drum is stuck on the axle. I've sprayed it down with penetrant and let it set for 24 hrs, but it won't budge. The drum is slightly warped and needs replaced. Brake pads aren't rubbing however.
Any suggestions as to how to remove it? Will it be necessary to remove the entire axle and tap the drum off?

4Tracks when i had to replace the brakes on my old 86 Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 , i had to use a big rubber mallet and bang on the drums in a criss cross pattern as i turned the drums to get them off ; the cheap mallet i bought at Big Lots was nothing but a pile of rubber chunks on the first drum !
So i sent my brother to Sears , i told him to get me the biggest and best mallet they had ; I think it cost $9.99 or $19.99 but it was best and got the job done plus it has a Life Time Warrantee !
It cost 3 time's more than the one from Big Lots , but it did the job and was all in one piece when i was through removing the rest of the drums ; i don't know about your quad but the drums on the Foreman had 2 metric bolt head screw's holding the drum in place !
2 on each drum and there is a trick to making them come off easier , you can take a peice of 2x4 wooden block and with a small sledge hammer or dead blow hammer ; and knock the wheel stud bolts free from the axle spindle !
Sometimes this will work best on one that has sit up a long time since the last time they were taken off , they can be a bugger to remove ; just don't lose your cool and they will come off and keep us up dated as to your progress and don't forget to install new rubber O'Riing gasket all the gasket's and check the rubber plug's on the brake backing plate and install them from the outside of backing plate to keep water mud and dirt fom getting inside the drums ! .........

you've got that right Gimpster , the rear drum was the one that chewed up the cheap rubber mallet ; and it was the one i had to knock out the axle stud bolts before it would come off !
And the rear drum is probally the one that slightly warped on 4Tracks quad , but like i said don't lose your cool ; it's hard to get off but i know that they will come off if you keep on knocking and i got mine off without removing the gasket but i put a new one in it's place anyway because if you don't water and dirt will get in !
You just got to take your time , the 2 on the front were a peice a cake ; compaired to the one rear but it's turn will come !
The Dealer was suppose to remove the rear drum and replace the wheel bearing at the time , when they put 2 new dunlops on the rear ; but i didn't know at the time i dropped it off that the Dealer Tammy wasn't the one who was doing the work !
I thought she would be the one who was repairing my quad or i would've just bought the part's from her , and i would've done the labor myself ; whitch is what i ended up doing all the labor except for mounting the new tire's anyway !
Because Tammy was racing that weekend when i thought she was going to do the work for me , but she farmed the work to a freind to do the work ; and he couldn't do the wheel bearing and i had to do the work myself !
But when i went to pick it up she told me he adjusted the valves for you to , and when she gave me a bill that total over $300.00 ; i made her knock off $150.00 from the bill because ; she farmed the work out this young guy who didn't know dooly squat and he didn't install the wheel bearing or brakes on the rear like he was suppose to ; she told me she was sorry that i had thought she was going to do the work and knocked off the $150.00 !
Plus when she found out the guy couldn't removed the rear hub to install the bearing or the rear brakes , she gave me the wheel bearing and a set of brake shoe's for all 3 wheel's ; and for the guy who told her he did everything to the Foreman he doesn't work for her now ! And Tammy kept saying how sorry she was about the missunderstanding ; and the next time i brought my quad in she would do the labor herself !
I told her not to worry about it and that i woud do the work when she was racing , and for her to just let me know who's going to be doing the work ; i knew if she had done the work it would've been done right !
And her shop is the only place i would buy part's from , she alway's treated me right weither it was part's or labor as long as she did the work or just watched to see it was done right !
When it comes to it i'll do my own work , if she's not available that's why when i bought my first new quad on Feb. 7th 2006 ; i bought it from Tammy's shop !
A new 2006 Arctic Cat 400 FIS Auto , and she let's me do my own maintence ; i just buy my oil filter's and plugs from her (even though she told me it didn't matter if i bought them from her or not ) and she sell's after market oil filters at the shop because she can sell them for less because they're cheaper and made by the same co. who makes the AC brand she still put's the time and date of the service in her computer to help me and all her customers that do their own work so she keeps the record's of when it was serviced so we don't have worry about losing the records !
There's not another Dealer in my town that treat me better , and if i need info on any of my freinds or family's cyclle or atv i just call Tammy ; and she'll tell me all i need to know to do the work at no charge !
There are a few other Dealers in my area that will give me info , but they won't go out of their way to help you with a brand they don't sell ; unless they know you well enough ! ..........

Yep, if you are loyal to one tech, stick with them. They know your unit best.
Same has happened here, one of my customers for years will bring their unit in, the manager has another tech work on the unit, nothing gets done the way I would have done it or other small details I catch or have discussed with them in the past does not get done and we loose the customer.
I hate when that happens
