1988 Honda 300X Fourtrack Starter R&R
Man I'm thinking that that starter aught to come right out. Sometimes it takes a little wiggling to get it out of its binding with the starter gears. also there is a rubber ring that kinda fits tight in that hole to prevent leaking of oil there. Might kinda have to push on it to get this ring to break aloose but it shouldn't take too much force. When the seal is loose I.E. the starter can be wiggled easily with your hand then it should come on out. Could be wrong though some starters have a keeper type deal that has to be removed first but I don't think this is the case on your 300 as the starter is identical to the one on my trx250 86' model. Ive pulled it several times and never had any trouble. Wish i could be more help. aratvguy.

They can be a pain in the **** to remove, I have two 300s, and three more motors, and I've had the starters off of all of them, along with my dad's four Honda 300s. Just take the cover off, it doesn't help much but it does a little, and just wiggle it a little and pull and wiggle and pull until it comes out. The first time that I had to do it, I couldn't get it out so everytime that the starter didn't work, I took a wrench and beat on it and it would work for a while.
