400EX: Bad Starter!?
#1
I changed the oil to a type the Honda Dealer recemended for winter. Once I put it in and I wanted to start it, it had a lot of trouble starting, but if you cranked on it alot it would... Now, a nice warm day it won't start at all I have to put it in 1st and crank on it (I know thats bad for it..) and it will start and run for a little (only with the choke on) and it will die.. I got it running in the back for a few seconds and it died so I put it in nutral and I pushed that starter and its making this like grinding noise.. I dont know whats up!? Is it the starter? It sounds like it! If it is the starter and I need to get a new one, what brand should I get? Are there diferent brands?

You may want to look into why its so hard to start....maybe a plugged idle jet, or the valves are too tight.
Next time you find yourself in a hard to start situation, its alot easier on everything, to bump start. Just have someone pull the quad with a tow strap, and it should pop right off, with out wearing out the starter. Its posible the starter is fried from all the heat from cranking. Ive had good luck finding starters at a good price on ebay.
