Default Trx300 4x4 needs more low end

I have a '97 300 4x4 and the low end power it has is just pitiful. It does have one size taller and wider tires on it but even when i had the originals on it, it was still weak. It looks close to new with low hours i changed the tires maybe 4 months ago and the originals had a little more than 1/2 tread so nothing should be wore out. The engine makes no noises and doesn't smoke. I tried a supertrapp full exhaust and it made it faster but the low end was nonexistent so i took it off. I also have a power kit w/ K&N. Right now i have a 250sx carb on it to try to get more low end but with either carb it is weak. i had one friend say he knew people with one that would pull trucks out of the mud, they would just have to load the wheeler up with people to weight it down. So we tried that with mine and 4 people total and it wouldn't even spin in mud with original tires on it. So is there any hope with getting more low end? and a different wheeler isn't an option because all the ones I've ridden just keep getting taller and bigger and i like the hills and keeping the shiny side up. thanks for any help.

well filter helps get air in but you need to get more out (exaust). higher compression piston will help too. go to highlifter.com and talk to those guys. they specialize in mudding and have endless experience iwth the honda 4x4 lineup especially the timeless 300 4x4. Talk to them and im sure they can hook you up with the right gear within your price range. they have been around for a while and really do know what they are talking about. all really nice helpful people. I got my diamondplate skids for my wolverine from them and couldnt be happier. thats a product they make in house and its fit and finish has put up with hell for years now...

Mine will yank a 2 quads out of the mud in Low gear it has strong low end, but its all stock and is untouched from stock, get it back to stock specs on jetting air and exhaust, if this doesnt work then you have a week engine.

Like the other guys said, there must be something wrong with your engine because mine has great low end, and it has a WWWWWWHHHHHHOOOOOLLLLLLLEEEE lot of miles on it. I just got back from some snow riding, and I'm still wet from where the 300 spun the tires so much and covered me in snow. Think I'll go back once I dry off lol.

My 300 has plenty bottom end but like others have said, it lacks topend. Check the compression and do a leakdown test, I suspect you have a broken or collapsed compression ring.

thanks for the replies. I'll do a compression test and see what i get. I should also mention I already checked the valve clearances and all was good.

I had to rig a compression tester together to get it to fit so the needle wasn't to steady (good gauge though) and while the engine was cold the compression was at 140psi so that's not the problem either. Maybe i should take the head off and port/polish it. I don't know what else to do.
