Hello Atvers

I have a 00 Rancher and after almost a year I still have problems with my gearbox, it won't shift down, except when going up hill. Here in Portugal/Europe the recall was about the A arms and the gearbox, in witch my dealer changed the shift plate????.

I want to pose two questions:

- Do you ever had problems with you gearbox, only downshifting?
- Did your dealer changed anything on your gearbox?

i've had a little riding time on A rancher.it shifted down good but i will say that by 2005 everyone who owns a rancher will be replacing their transmission.That shifter has the worse feel and makes a little clunking noise when you shift, not grinding but a clunk

 

I just bought a 2001 Rancher ES. It performs well, I guess. This is my first quad so have nothing to compare it to. It too seems noisy when it shifts,is this common or just my imagination? I have not purchased the extended warranty but would if I thought there might be problems with the transmission.

Here's my .02 worth. The "Clunk" you here, is not really the gears per say but the solenoid kicking in and out that shifts the gears, kind of like electric door locks on a car but a heavy duty one. I will admit the ES does make a lot of noise when shifting. But I wouldn't worry about it. 800 miles and not a problem yet oh … except I have a hell of a time keeping up with my nephews on their Banshees. ;-)

as far as down shifting problems I have had none. If your bike does not down shift when you let off on the throttle a little you got something wrong. you might do the disgusting task of taking it to a dealer

 

I switched to synthetic oil and the shifting is now much smoother. There is no clunking and gear changes are very quiet, also try bliping the throttle just before shifting down. You also might want to try and adjust your clutch, it is a simple task and can make shifting much less clunky.

 

Addressing the clunking noise when shifting the Rancher ES: mine was very pronounced when the ATV was newer. I've got almost 1000 miles on it and now there is very little noise at all when shifting gears.

Don't know if this was adjusted by the dealer when I had my valves adjusted, but it's worked quieter since that time.
