Default urgent help, stipped drain plug!

I've read a couple other posts and other info on the web, but still unsure my options. I can always drill the pan out and re-tap, but prefer not to if there's another option. The bolt is fine, no visible damage, even grabs the threads a bit, but when screwed all the way in, it gets easier and won't tighten up. What size bolt/threads should be on a 93' honda fourtrax 300? Again, I've drilled and tapped plenty of things in the past, but don't want to drop $20 on a tap just for one use. I also can't stand up the ole honda on it's rear end by myself and need to be able to ride this thursday. Any help would be great, If not, I'll re tap the hole tomorrow. Thanks guys!

Use a heli-coil kit. DO NOT try to screw in an oversized plug. It'll but the housing.

If the plug (bolt), to your eyes looks OK, then probably you haven't damaged the threads in the hole too bad. But to be sure, go and get a new plug (bolt) and washer. Then run a tap into the drain hole, slow and sure. Should do the trick. Do not over tight'en. When you have things fixed to where you feel it is good, dab a small amount of silicone on the washer only. You will be good to go.

If you can find one in the size (metric) and the same thread pitch, they do make self taping drain plugs for some applications. Check at local auto parts, they can usually measure the plug and gauge the thread pitch. Long shot, but a try.

use a heli-coil. works better than new, and very easy to install.

thanks guys. I re tapped the hole for 1/2". from what I've read 1/2 is slightly larger than 12mm. Also the 12mm was much finer thread, so the 1/2 had plenty to cut into. Found a 1/2" allan head bolt that is round and same size as org plug, also have 1/2" plug for cars. One or the other should work, if not, I'll drill and start from scratch w/ 14 mm. Thanks again! I also am taking w/ me a 3/8" rubber plug that tightens down and expands just for back up. Only problem is that I may have to cut the "'lever" part to keep it recessed under the skid plate. Thanks for the help!

Glad to hear you never twisted an oversized self tapping drain plug into the case. Like someone posted before, self tapping threaded drain plugs can and most times will split the case. I normally retap the case to accept a 14mm drainplug. Double check the surface around the hole where the sealing washer seats. Many times the outer edges of this area needs to be broadened to accept the larger drain plug washer so it will totally seal

WOW, thanks for the tip. Never would of belived a self tapping plug would to that. Figured the aluminum housing would be softer and cut easy, course didn't really think you could find one to work anyway. Good advise.
