Default honda 300 trx engine problem

I am working on this atv for a friend. It would run on choke as soon as you took it off choke it would spit spudder and die.I thoroughly cleaned carb with no success, even put another carb on and same thing.I adjusted valves which was noisy.when I was adjusting the valves I noticed the cam lobes were worn down so I removed the rocker cover to find worn cam and rockers.someone had put the oil filter in backwards.the engine had good compression so I replaced the cam and rockers, changed oil and filter and it crank right up but with same symptoms ,only run on choke.should I go back to the carb.any suggestions appreciated.
