Default Fare cost of a rebuild

My 05 rancher got swampped and the dealler wants to charge me 1678 to rebuild the motor says it needs new crank and top end. So what i understand is it needs top and bottom rebuilt and the parts are 903 dollars. Is this a fare price or are they bunning me.

Thanks

My take is the dealer will always be more, but a) it will be done right and with the right parts and b) be backed by Honda, which pretty much warantees everything.

I had my 86 350X rebuilt by a motorcycle repair shop for $300 plus parts ($800), and I had to then go to Honda to have them tie up some loose ends which the guy did not catch (needed new oil pump, and rocker arms). If I would have ran it I would have had a blown engine.

I'd say $1678 is fair, but you can probably have it rebuilt by an independent mechanic for about $1300 - $1500, definitely worth the extra cost to have it done right.

At least you know it will be done right, or at least have somone to go back to if they dont do the job right.

Thats about right for a Dealer to do it,
Just had my 420 bottom ,and top end done.

It was around $1750 ,but in total they did over 2k in work because I had to take it back twice.
The 1st build made it 26 miles before fouling the plug to the point of no start.

They bored the original cylinder 0,50 ,but that didnt work so they went back in ,and put a brand new cylinder ,and stock piston back in.
All was well ,but I had no compression braking so they had to go back in ,and replace all the clutch parts.
Running great now.
