I've got a 2000 Recon and it does well for what I'm using it for (trail ridin, some mud, and hunting). I paid $880 for mine and I only had a few minor things to fix so you should be able to get that one for no more than $1400. It's a great little quad and although it doesn't have the power of the bigger bikes it is still fairly peppy.

Great fun little machines! Pretty much bulletproof, with some simple maintenance. If you don't need the racks or the big fenders for protection from the wet, then the 250EX is a very similar machine, but a substantial 50 pounds lighter and a bit more stable!
Be wary if it is an ES. There are half a dozen ES problem posts on the board today, so it's buyer beware on that one!
FMF makes a couple of mufflers that fit this engine. That, a UNI air filter, and some vents in the airbox lid (and of course a rejet), will perk it up a little.
