Default Which Honda Utility

The Rubicon and Rincon transmissions are really quite different...

The Rincon has clutch packs and a torque converter- basically a smaller version of an automotive type 3 speed automatic transmission, where the ECM selects gears via selenoids controlling the 3 clutches. It doesn't have low range (and I agree with TLC, it would be a nice option- bone headed actually that Honda chose not to put low range on it).

The Rubicon has a continually variable hydrostat drive, with an electric shift motor controlling the angle of a swash plate to vary effective gear ratio, and a low range is incorporated into the sub-transmission. Essentially it is a hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor, similar to the hydrostat drive found in some tractors. The volume of the pump section is fixed, but the volume of the motor section varies with the angle of the swash plate, which varies the effective gear ratio. There is a centrifugal clutch before the hydrostat unit that disengages when the engine is at idle to allow the quad can sit stopped in gear with the engine idling. In the hub of the centrifugal clutch is a sprag one way drive, which allows the quad to have engine braking/compression hold back.
