Default bike would not start

I was changeing my oil cuz I drowned my bike. I changed the oil 2 times and after that I went ride for like 15 to 20 minutes I came home cuz it was dark I stoped and left the bike running while I move the cardboard box that I layed down so I dont get oil all over the ground. I got back on the bike I hit the gas and it was sputtering i guess it was also heitating to. I would hit the gas and it would not rev. Than the bike killed. I tried starting it but it wouldent. It would start but it wont idle and it would die if u get off the gas. Than it wouldent start at all. I was trying to start it for 5 min but it wouldent start. Than I took off the cap to my gas tank for some reson and than I closed it. Than I tryed again and the bike started it was running fine. What the hell just happen???? How could I not make this happen again. I thought the bike locked up cuz I sunk it.

Could the vent line to the gas cap be plug up or something????
