Default Reverse on 420 Rancher

Hi all, awsome site. I have looked through the forum for an answer to my question, but can't find the solution. I have a 2007 Rancher 4x4 es. It will only go into reverse with the key in the on position and the engine is not running. Once it is running I have to turn it off, turn the key back on and put it in reverse using the thumb selection and restart the bike by pulling the brake handle in. I can shift through the other gears fine. Any ideas?

These ES systems just seem to be a recipie for trouble!

Might be that it is idling to fast, and it won't let you do the sift because of that??? Maybe when you turn it off, it resets the system and that is why it works again after that.

I would first check the clutch adjustment .. If it is idling to fast it won't shift into reverse .. It should idle between 1,350 -1,450 RPM .. If it is idling high it is usually caused by a sticky IACV ..

I will check the clutch, how do I check the rpms? Kicking myself for getting the esp. Thought Honda would eventually get the bugs out of this setup. Thanks HondaMechanic.

You would need a tach to check the RPM's , you can get inexpensive ones that work well Tiny Tach makes one ... I have 2 ..1 is made by Fluke the other made by Mac Tools but they were quite expensive ..
