1999 Honda 300 EX - Gear Issues
#1
Hello all Im new to ths site. I have 1999 Honda 300 EX and I got the ATV as a trade for a extra drumset I had. The bike has a new top end gaskets, piston, rings and timing chain.
The issue is when 2 fold. I have a really hard time finding neutral. When I start the bike and go into 1st and then shift up to neutral it has a hard time it either doesnt come out of 1st or it jumps right into 2nd and I have to play with it to get it into neutral.
2nd issue: When Im ridning it, it jumps in and out of gear like I will startout in 1st and get going then it jumps out I put myself back in gear and its ok same thing happens when I go up the scale 2nd, 3rd etc.
Is there any type of adjustment I can do? The guy I got the ATV from said it has a heavier basket in it(Im new to this not sure what that means) but I mean it flys but how can i get it to be smooth as butter going through the gears and finding neutral? My 1998 yamaha YZF600R shifts like hot knife through butter. How can I replicate that on my ATV?

He's talking about a clutch basket. If he had to replace the clutch and basket I bet it's been rode hard and may have gear teeth issues. Hopefully not, but if the clutch is adjusted and you have good Honda GN-4 oil in it, there's not any other adjustments that I know of. Is the clutch adjusted right? You should have about 1/8" of play at the lever before the clutch arm down on the engine moves. Is the clutch slipping? Will it stall if you hold the brake and slowly let the clutch out? If so, the clutch is good. Anyone else got ideas?
