Start out slow, when I had my 400ex I put a twist on it, jumped on took off and almost killed myself, it's a different feel than a dirtbike. You'll see what I mean. But I got used to it within a few rides.

 

If you install a twister, I bet you will go back to the thumb. A twist on an ATV is downright dangerous. To elaborate on what Jaster94 said: When you're on a bike and turn, the relationship between your forearm and handlebar does not change because your body stays "in line" with the bike. Therfore, nothing changes as far as your hand on the twist throttle. However, when you trun a quad, you actually "turn" the bars. The relationship between your forearm and the bars changes and therfore you hand will involutarily twist or untwist a twist throttle depending on if it is a right or left hand turn. With a thumb throttle, the pertinent relationship is between your hand and your thumb. This relationship will not change as you turn the handlebars, which means the throttle will stay put. Go ahead and put a twister on, but consider yourself warned.

 

I have had a twist on my trx300 for years and love it! It is much easier in my thumb/wrist!It took no time at all getting used to not twisting uncontrolably while turning and I do alot of trail/woods driving and plowing!

in my opoinin it just depends on you. If i have a passenger on the quad i wouldnt but a twist throttle on it. But i also have owned nothing but a bike up till this last week when i was riding a fully built banshee with a passenger i was glad i didnt have a twist throttle. But agian if i dont have passengers twist throttle is the way to go no matter what it is.

 

sounds like to me that you grew up with twist throttles and a thumb throttle is "new to you" as far as machines go. you might not even notice what everyone is saying, although they are 100% correct. i put a twist on my R because i was riding on a small MX track and my thumb would cramp up after 3 hard laps. so i put a twister on... well for casual trail riding it works AWESOME. Racing my thumb no longer cramped but i gave full throttle in some places where i didnt want to. it was down right scarey. i even went around a left hand corner and spun out because i was leaning while sliding and couldnt release the gas. luckily i didnt roll over. i am going to swap my R twist throttle out for the stock thumb throttle whenever i get the time... i hope this helps.
