What do you look for in an oil filter? One that isn't glued together?

I'm working on an engine now... dumping kerosene in and draining over and over trying to get all the aluminum shavings out. I'm surprised to see big hunks of black plastic coming out along with along other unidentifiable pieces of stuff. What a chore, but beats cracking the cases open.
