I have since had a 350 in, which belonged to a cockle picker and had no electrics except starter obtained by shorting across solenoid, charging circuit and ignition. No pull start either. It wasn't starting, and on checking ignition I couldn't get a spark. I tested all wires to CDI and found the neutral wire wasn't signaling neutral. Bridged it to earth and got the spark back, once started you could remove the jumper wire and it continued to run, just wouldn't start without it. Normal bikes won't try to start if the neutral circuit goes wrong as it is also wired to the start button circuit, but this bike had no start button circuit anyway. Could be wrong, but the symptoms are similar to what you get with the "only fires if you take your finger off" fault.
